Appalachian Poverty

This is one one topic that gets me on my soap box everytime I think about it. Why as a country do we allow people to live in such horried conditions. It may be a case of out of sight out of mind. There are news stories from time to time but then these people are treated like second class citizens.

  1. I've briefly been through an area of the Appalachian Virginia/West Virginia line. It is heartbreaking. I read a wonderful book last year (I'll have to look it up. My hubby bought it for my dad.) by a man who built a museum there. He chronicled this Appalachian craftsman for a span of more than forty years. I was incredibly interesting. The one thing I've been most disappointed in at church is that the majority of mission money goes overseas. There is so much here in the US that needs help. However, my son did go on a youth mission trip to the WV Appalachian region where they worked on a church, community library, homes, and integrated the WV youth in local activities. It was an eye opening experience for these teenagers to see how fortunate they were and instilled much compassion in them.
